WHAT IS LGBTQIA+?
LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/ questioning and “plus,” which represents other sexual identities including pansexual, asexual and omnisexual. It is the accepted and inclusive way to refer to the queer community, who can be grouped by one common theme, the fact they don’t identify as straight.
Coming out can be a difficult process for many young LGBTQ+ people. For some people, the most difficult part of the coming out process is coming out to themselves and accepting their sexuality, especially for people who grew up in an environment where LGBTQ+ people were not widely accepted. Growing up in a community like that means it can be difficult to admit to yourself that you may be attracted to people of your own gender or that you might be questioning your gender identity.
A step that lots of LGBTQ+ people find helpful is listening to other peoples coming out stories and using them to feel empowered to come out. Listening to a wide variety of stories will also help you better understand how people might react and also to help find the best way for you to come out.
